RoboSub is an international student competition. Student teams from around the world design and build robotic submarines, otherwise known as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). The behaviors demonstrated by these experimental AUVs mimic those of real-world systems, currently deployed around the world for underwater exploration, seafloor mapping, and sonar localization, amongst many others.
Key Details:
- Organizer: RoboNation, in collaboration with the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
- Venue: The competition typically takes place at the TRANSDEC facility in San Diego, California, USA.
- Eligibility: Open to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from around the world.
Competition Objectives:
The competition involves a series of tasks designed to test the capabilities of the AUVs. Tasks may include:
- Navigating through an underwater obstacle course.
- Manipulating objects such as opening a door or releasing a marker.
- Interacting with various underwater devices and signals.
- Performing complex maneuvers and autonomous decision-making.
Structure and Rules:
- Design and Build: Teams must design and construct their own AUVs, focusing on innovation and efficiency.
- Autonomy: AUVs must operate autonomously without human intervention once they are deployed.
- Technical Reports: Teams are required to submit technical reports detailing their design process, engineering solutions, and mission strategies.
- Presentations: In addition to the practical challenges, teams present their projects to a panel of judges, explaining their design choices and answering questions.
Scoring:
Teams are scored based on their AUVs' performance in completing the tasks, the quality and innovation of their designs, the accuracy and thoroughness of their technical reports, and the effectiveness of their presentations.
Resources and Support:
- Workshops and Webinars: RoboNation provides various resources, including workshops, webinars, and forums, to help teams prepare for the competition.
- Past Competition Data: Teams can access information from previous competitions to help guide their design and strategy.
Upcoming Event
- Dates: The 2024 RoboSub competition details, including exact dates, are typically announced on the RoboNation website.
- Location: TRANSDEC, San Diego, California, USA.
How to Get Involved
- Form a Team: Gather a group of interested students and a faculty advisor or mentor.
- Register: Follow the registration guidelines on the RoboNation website.
- Build and Test: Design and build your AUV, then rigorously test it to ensure reliability and performance.
- Prepare Reports and Presentation: Document your design process and prepare to present your project to the judges.
